Academy closed to students Wednesday 26 March
Parents and carers have been sent letters to inform them that the academy will be closed to students on Wednesday 26 March 2014.
We have been informed by the National Union of Teachers (NUT that they intend to take discontinuous action on Wednesday 26 March 2014 when there will be a one day strike.
This action is not against the academy itself but is part of national industrial action organised by these trade unions about changes to the pensions schemes of their members.
Neither the governing body nor the Principal is legally allowed to close the academy ‘in sympathy’ with the strike and we will not do so. However, our main concern is the safety of our students. The academy will, therefore, be closed to all students on Wednesday 26 March 2014 as it is not safe to remain open due to reduction in staffing on this day. If the action is prolonged we will endeavour to protect the education of all students and, in particular, of those on examination courses. Members of staff who are not in the NUT will be on site and may offer the opportunity for Year 11 students who they teach to come into the academy for their one hour lesson. Their teacher will inform Year 11 students of this on an individual basis. The closure will not impact on GCSE examinations.
We must all hope that the issues over which the industrial action has arisen are resolved as soon as possible.
On Friday, 4 April the academy will close for the Easter holidays at 12 noon and will re-open for the Summer Term on Tuesday 22 April 2014.
