The English department is committed to raising standards. Students are pushed hard to achieve their target grades and as a result aspirations have risen and students want to succeed.

Curriculum overview

  • Years 7-8: Four lessons per week
  • In the spring of Year 8, students choose the options subjects they will take from Year 9 to Year 11. Students and their families are guided through this process through taster lessons, assemblies, our options online guide and a special options information evening. We support all students to choose subjects they will enjoy and which they will succeed in, and which will unlock future opportunities.
  • Years 9-10: Four English lessons per week. Students can also choose to study two lessons per week of Media Studies as one of their options.
  • Year 11: Five lessons per week as students prepare for their exams. All students take both English Language and English Literature. (Currently there is no Year 11 Media Studies cohort).

Qualifications entered in Year 11

GCSE English Language (AQA)
GCSE English Literature (AQA)
